FSSAI is a government body tasked with ensuring food security in India. In other words, FSSAI was made the only department in the entire country that could oversee food safety and quality standards across the country. Today, all food manufacturers are required to obtain an FSSAI registration /license to operate in the market.

The FSSAI was established under the Ministry of Public Health as an autonomous body for the purpose of regulating the food licensing process in the country. The legal support 'used by the Public Health and Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006' is a law passed to ensure the safety of food products through the enforcement of necessary standards and regulations. The main headquarters of FSSAI in India is located in the country's capital, New Delhi. In addition, there are six regional offices which manage these divisions located in Guwahati, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Cochin. The import division of FSSAI has been entrusted with the task of monitoring food in relation to imports coming into the country. The quality of the imported food is subject to the scrutiny and monitoring of the FSSAI. The Regulation and Codex Division of FSSAI is tasked with the role of designing the framework to ensure food safety and quality standards. It serves to establish science-based standards on regulations about food safety, as well as formulate adequate suggestions and recommendations for process management.

The International Cooperation Division of FSSAI is responsible for the actions that cooperate with foreign bodies and governments regarding food security between countries. It is the department that handles any contact coming from a foreign country, with food safety and other related quality issues.

The Regulatory Compliance Department of FSSAI is the department responsible for ensuring that the existing rules, regulations are followed and a suitable FSSAI food licensing/FSSAI Registration system is created. In simple terms, its role is to ensure that regulatory compliance of all concerned parties is maintained at all times in relation to the existing legal framework. Additionally, it also provides reports to the Central Department regarding legal matters on food safety and overall quality.

The Food Safety Management Systems Division of FSSAI is tasked with ensuring the overall food safety regulatory process and managerial oversight of the FSSAI Food License (FSSAI registration System). Its role is to identify, evaluate and control the food hazards present in the current supply chain. It is derived from the basic materials used for food preparation process and packaging, as well as for storage and transportation. In other words, it is an all encompassing system of regulatory process, managed by this division of FSSAI.

FSSAI's risk notice and R&D division is entrusted with two important tasks. Details of the same are given below:

• Risk assessment – This function relates to the existing risk assessment process in relation to the existing food safety mechanisms. Anything considered a threat to public health and safety is managed by this department. Its function is, in simple terms, to assess and assess the degree of potential risk in relation to public health, which is related to a food product or related thing.
• The Department of FSSAI R&D is tasked with all the research and developmental processes associated with the food safety regulatory mechanism. In simple words, its role is to ensure that sound mechanisms exist in relation to research and division, as well as the establishment of high standards to promote better food security. The tasks under this department include evidence based food safety testing, collaborating with the parties concerned on topics related to ensuring food safety and developing food testing methods as well as promoting any applicable technology.

The Information Education Communication Department of FSSAI is assigned the role of managing all information related to FSSAI, and after its dissemination to the general public and related parties. In simple words, the role of the department is to disseminate the necessary information to anyone who may need it. Information circulating about, among others, important details about food safety, hygiene information, adulteration detection, current standards for food preparation, etc. are included. Just outside, it serves as the information dissemination arm of the entire FSSAI department.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to monitor the quality of food products being produced or processed by various food operators has mandated food operators to obtain Food license. Registrations under FSSAI are of three types FSSAI Basic registration- For annual turnover below Rs.12 lakhs can apply FSSAI State license-For annual turnover in the range of Rs.12lakh -20 crores need to apply for State level License. FSSAI Central license -For annual turnover above Rs.20 crores, apply for Central Level License.

Using FSSAI website , Form A is filled and payment can be made. After payment, Form B has to be filed along with multiple declarations and resolutions such as Board resolution, No Objection Certificate by landowner to establish the identity of business. On submission of application with documents, a code is generated for provisional registration which is to be used for future interactions. The application is then reviewed by the department and takes around 30 to 40 days before the receipt of license number.

Validity of FISSAI license is for one to five years Renewal of the license has to be done within 30 days before expiry .
