How to Verify GST Registration Number?

A taxpayer's registration under GST is the mechanism by which he or she becomes a registered taxpayer. A specific registration number known as the Goods and Services Tax Identification Number is allocated to a company after it has been successfully registered (GSTIN). All GST-registered businesses are assigned this unique identification number called the GST Identification Number, or GSTIN. This is a 15-digit number that the central government assigns to taxpayers when they register.
 
While purchasing through a dealer, who is charging you GST then mentioning of the GSTIN is mandatory. But what if the number provided is, fake? How do you verify it? Government has provided online tools for you check it but how to use it?
 
Here is a simple guide for you to verify any GST registration number, otherwise known as GSTIN.
 
Step 1- Visit the GST Portal Official Government Website
 
Step 2- Go to the Menu-bar and click the “Search Taxpayer” option and fill in the option with the GST Identification Number.
 
Step 3- Following the last step, you will be shown:
  • Legal name of the business
  • Date of registration
  • Constitution of business
  • GSTIN / UIN Status
  • Taxpayer Type
  Note- You will be able to see these details, only if the number entered is authentic.
 
Step 4- In case of a fake GSTIN, the page will show you an error message. If you come across this, you must contact the dealer and demand the correct GST Identification Number.
 
Step 5- In case of a different name of the dealer/ business, that means that the number is being used fraudulently. You must report this illegal activity.
