Introduction

The Food Safety and Standard Authority of India is abbreviated as FSSAI. It is responsible for establishing food distribution and manufacturing standards and is required of all operators, regardless of their size.

FSSAI was founded to establish a science-based standard for food articles and to regulate their manufacturing and distribution for consumption by India's 130 million people. After effective registration, the FSSAI department is directly controlled by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which issues a 14-digit registration number to the applicant.

Why was FSSAI enacted?

It was enacted to consolidate various food-safety laws throughout the world and it also creates a single-point-of-reference method. It makes sure that safe food-making practices are followed all over the nation. It also issues license to food businesses and monitors them accordingly. The aim was to get businesses up to the mark and get them to have FSSAI Registration.

Role of FSSAI
  • Regulations are being drafted to establish food safety requirements and guidelines.
  • Providing food companies with FSSAI food safety licences and certifications.
  • In addition, establishing procedures and standards for laboratories in the food industry.
  • To make recommendations to the government when it comes to policy formulation.
  • In addition, data on pollutants in food items, the detection of emerging threats, and the implementation of a rapid warning system will be collected.
  • Creating a food safety knowledge network throughout the world.
  • Furthermore, raise public consciousness about food safety and standards.
  • Issue licenses and get businesses, FSSAI Registration.
The food processing industry is one of India's largest, with tremendous potential to boost the agricultural economy, the establishment of large-scale manufacturing units and food chain outlets, as well as job creation and export earnings.

Benefits of FSSAI Registration:
  1. Customer Safety: With cases like Maggie and allergy attacks, food security has recently come under scrutiny; as seen in the case of Burger King, food safety regulations are being taken seriously. All food businesses must adhere to the regulations or face severe penalties.
  2. Good for Business: The FSSAI licence will also help you grow your company in other states in the future. You may also use your FSSAI licence to get loans for your operation or company. Consumers would have more faith in you if you have a valid food licence, which will make it easier for you to build your land.
  3. Legal Benefit: The use of the FSSAI logo on your menu and packaging bags gives the consumer trust in the hygiene and quality of the food you're selling or making. In addition, the true cost of entry is much lower than the penalty that will be imposed.
As a result, it is often recommended that food business owners obtain an FSSAI licence before launching their operations.
